ZOSI C298 Max: Dual-Lens PTZ Security Camera Review

When it comes to home security, a good camera can make all the difference. I recently got my hands on the ZOSI C298 Max 4K 8MP Dual-Lens PTZ Security Camera to see if it lives up to its promises, especially at its aggressive price point. This camera boasts an interesting dual-lens setup, with one fixed wide-angle lens and one pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) lens, along with a host of intelligent detection features and night vision modes. The big question is: does it offer enough capability and reliability to be a worthwhile addition to your home security?

What I Built

To test the ZOSI C298 Max, I installed it on the exterior of my home, under the eaves. The camera comes with a versatile mounting bracket that can attach to either a vertical surface or a ceiling, which was a nice touch for flexibility. The unboxing included all the necessary hardware: a security sticker, mounting template, documentation, an Ethernet waterproofing kit, a tiny reset tool, mounting screws, and a DC power supply. Installation was straightforward, involving mounting the bracket and then snapping the camera into place.

Why It Works

The ZOSI C298 Max aims to provide comprehensive coverage with its dual-lens design. The fixed wide-angle lens offers a constant overview of a specific area, which is crucial for not missing any action. Meanwhile, the lower PTZ lens can be controlled remotely to pan, tilt, and zoom, allowing for dynamic monitoring of specific points of interest. This dual approach is a clever solution to a common limitation of single-lens PTZ cameras, where moving the lens means losing sight of the primary fixed view.

The camera connects to your home network via 2.4GHz Wi-Fi (it doesn't support 5G) and is managed through the ZosiSmart app. The app allows for an array of settings, including motion detection, human detection, intrusion detection, and even vehicle detection. It also features different night vision modes, including color night vision which turns on bright spotlights, and infrared black and white night vision. The 'Smart Night Vision' mode defaults to black and white and switches to color when motion is detected, combining the best of both worlds.

Math & Run-Time Numbers

While this isn't a power station or battery system, performance numbers are still key. In my testing, the camera's human tracking feature worked, but it had its limitations. It would track me for a second, lose me behind a post, and then reacquire me. Sometimes it focused on my legs rather than my face, indicating room for improvement in its algorithm. In daylight, the text on my jacket was readable when I was close to the camera, but became harder to discern as I moved further away.

Night vision, however, was impressive. The white spotlights effectively illuminated my entire backyard, providing clear color images when motion was detected. The infrared mode also performed well, offering crisp black and white footage in complete darkness. The fact that the lights move with the PTZ camera is a significant advantage, ensuring that the area you're actively monitoring is always well-lit.

When To Use This vs. Alternatives

The ZOSI C298 Max is an excellent option if you're on a tight budget but still need a capable outdoor security camera. It's significantly better than having no camera at all, providing dual-lens coverage, decent night vision, and smart alerts for under $100. It's ideal for homeowners who want to keep an eye on their property without a significant investment.

However, if you require more precise PTZ control, extremely robust build quality, or a more polished software experience, you might consider higher-end alternatives. Brands like Reolink or Amcrest offer more refined PTZ functionality and broader ecosystems, but they come with a higher price tag, often in the $200-$300 range. For basic, yet comprehensive, outdoor monitoring on a budget, the ZOSI C298 Max is a strong contender.

Bottom Line

The ZOSI C298 Max camera offers an impressive array of features for its price. While it has some quirks, like the sensitive PTZ control and less-than-perfect human tracking, its dual-lens system and effective night vision make it a highly capable device. For anyone looking for an affordable security solution that punches above its weight, this camera is an outstanding proposition. It's not a perfect device, but its value proposition is hard to beat.
