What I Built

I’ve been running my Craftstrom plug-in solar panels, feeding clean electricity directly into my house. My outdoor outlets are on a shared circuit, which presents a challenge. To address this, I installed the Craftstrom Smart NEC Breaker between my solar inverter and the wall outlet. This device acts as an intelligent circuit guard, ensuring my home's wiring remains safe from potential overloads.

Why It Works

Most homes in the US have 15 Amp breakers with 14-gauge wire for standard outlets, rated for a maximum of 1,800 watts. Circuit breakers are designed to trip when the load exceeds this rating, preventing wires from overheating and causing fires.

Imagine a microinverter producing 1,000 watts (hypothetically) and a heavy load, like a portable air conditioner, drawing 2,500 watts on the same shared circuit. This means the wires between the solar inverter and the heavy load could be carrying the full 2,500 watts—substantially more than their 1,800-watt rating—without the breaker tripping. This creates a serious fire hazard.

A dedicated circuit for each device (solar and heavy load) solves this. Each device has its own breaker. If the heavy load pulls 2,500 watts, its dedicated breaker sees the full load and trips, protecting the wiring. The solar's dedicated circuit safely handles its 1,000-watt output.

The Craftstrom Smart NEC Breaker addresses the shared circuit danger. It constantly monitors the voltage on the circuit. When a heavy load is introduced elsewhere on the same shared circuit, it causes a slight voltage sag. The Smart NEC Breaker detects this sag and automatically shuts off the solar power, preventing the wires from exceeding their safe capacity.
