When planning a home solar power system, many jump straight to panels and batteries. But I've got a different idea: invest in a whole-home power monitoring system first. Collecting at least a year's worth of consumption data from your house can save you from overspending on an oversized system or, worse, underestimating your needs and ending up with insufficient power.

What I Built
I installed the Refoss Smart Energy Monitor EM16 Pro in my main electrical panel. This device, roughly the size of a small router, connects to your home's circuits via current transformer (CT) clamps. It measures power consumption at individual circuit levels and across your main lines, providing granular data on exactly what's drawing power in your home.
My existing setup includes a Luxpower 12000XP inverter and various battery banks. While my inverter gives me generation data, it doesn't tell me what's consuming that power or what my overall home usage patterns are. The Refoss monitor fills this critical gap, integrating seamlessly without needing to connect my inverter to the internet. It's a separate, independent monitoring system that provides invaluable insights.
Installation involved turning off the main power, removing the breaker panel cover, verifying zero volts with a multimeter, and then physically installing the unit and its many CT clamps. I routed the Wi-Fi antenna outside the metal enclosure for optimal signal. The power harness connects to both hot legs and the neutral bus bar in the panel. The main CT clamps go around the service mains, and smaller CT clamps go around individual circuit wires. It's a detailed process, and as always, working with electrical systems is dangerous and can cause injury, death, or property damage. Why It Works
The Refoss EM16 Pro works by providing a comprehensive, real-time snapshot of your home's energy flow. This data is critical for several reasons:
- Informed Decisions: Before you buy costly solar equipment, you'll know your exact power demands, preventing you from purchasing an undersized or oversized system.
- Efficiency & Optimization: Identify energy hogs or phantom loads you didn't know existed. With granular data, you can create powerful automations to utilize solar power more efficiently as it's generated, rather than pushing excess back to the grid for minimal credit.
- Home Assistant Integration: This is a huge selling point. The Refoss EM16 Pro integrates directly with Home Assistant, an open-source home automation platform. This unlocks extensive possibilities for custom automations and data analysis beyond what a proprietary app might offer.
- Remote Monitoring & Alerts: Track your consumption from anywhere. Set up alerts for unusual power draws, which can notify you of a failing appliance (like a freezer) before it's too late, potentially saving food or preventing further damage.
- Privacy: You can monitor your home's energy without connecting your primary solar inverter to the internet, maintaining a layer of privacy and security.
Parts & Specs
- Refoss Smart Energy Monitor EM16 Pro: Main control unit.
- CT Clamps: Two large clamps for main service lines (up to 200A), sixteen smaller clamps for branch circuits (up to 60A).
- Power Supply: 100-240V, 50/60Hz.
- Power Consumption: <3 Watts.
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi (2.4GHz), Bluetooth.
- Integration: Home Assistant via Open API, MQTT.
Math & Run-Time Numbers
While the video focuses on the installation and setup, the core benefit is the data it enables. My Refoss monitor immediately showed voltage readings of around 123-124V across my circuits. Once operational, it will track kilowatt-hours (kWh) for each circuit and overall. This allows me to:
- Calculate exact daily, weekly, and monthly energy consumption.
- Determine precise run-times for appliances under solar power.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of energy-saving measures.
- Accurately size future battery banks or solar array expansions based on real-world usage, not guesswork.
The app also allows for electricity bill calculations, helping you understand costs in real-time. For 240V circuits, if only one CT clamp is used, a "circuit factor" can be set to '2' in the app to double the reading and accurately reflect total power draw.
Pros & Cons
Pros:
- Deep integration with Home Assistant for advanced automation.
- Granular, circuit-level power consumption data.
- Helps optimize solar self-consumption and avoid grid export waste.
- Identifies phantom loads and inefficient appliances.
- Remote monitoring and customizable alerts.
- Local data processing keeps sensitive energy data off vendor clouds.
Cons:
- Installation requires comfort and experience working inside an electrical panel.
- Can lead to a lot of wiring inside the panel if many circuits are monitored.
- Initial setup and naming of individual circuits can be time-consuming.
When To Use This vs. Alternatives
The Refoss EM16 Pro is ideal for homeowners who are serious about energy independence or significantly reducing their utility bill. It's a foundational tool if you're planning a solar installation, want to expand an existing one, or simply aim to understand and reduce your overall energy footprint.
Alternatives like utility smart meters offer broad usage data but lack the circuit-level detail. Smart plugs monitor individual devices but don't provide a whole-home overview or integrate as deeply for automation. Inverter-specific monitoring primarily tracks solar generation, not home consumption. The Refoss EM16 Pro stands out by providing both comprehensive and granular data, coupled with powerful Home Assistant integration, making it superior for data-driven energy management.
Bottom Line
Before you commit to a major solar investment, understanding your home's energy consumption patterns is paramount. The Refoss Smart Energy Monitor EM16 Pro provides the detailed insights needed to make smart, cost-effective decisions. Its Home Assistant integration is a game-changer for advanced users, offering unparalleled control and automation opportunities.
