I recently got my hands on the Bateria Power 12.8V 100Ah LiFePO4 battery and their 20A MPPT solar charge controller. What really struck me is the incredible price-to-performance ratio this duo offers, easily standing up to much more expensive alternatives.
Disclosure: Bateria Power sent this unit for testing. All opinions and test results are my own.
What I Built
For this test, I set up a temporary off-grid system featuring the Bateria Power 12.8V 100Ah LiFePO4 battery paired with their SunRock 20S MPPT solar charge controller. I connected two 200-watt solar panels in series, for a total of 400 watts, to the charge controller. The controller then fed power into the battery. To test the battery's real-world capacity and ability to handle various loads, I connected it to a Renogy 3000W inverter charger, running extension cords to different household appliances.
Why It Works
The core of this setup's performance lies in the LiFePO4 battery and the MPPT charge controller. LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries are known for their deep cycle capabilities, long lifespan, and stable voltage output, making them ideal for off-grid applications. They can handle high current draws and surges, which is crucial for starting appliances like microwaves or vacuum cleaners without tripping the battery's internal Battery Management System (BMS).
The MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) solar charge controller maximizes the power harvested from the solar panels by continuously adjusting the voltage and current to find the optimal operating point. This is especially effective during periods of varying sunlight, ensuring more power gets to your battery. The SunRock 20S controller is also versatile, supporting multiple battery voltages (12V, 24V, 36V, 48V) and various battery chemistries, including LiFePO4, AGM, and Gel, making it adaptable to different systems.
Parts & Specs
- Bateria Power 12.8V 100Ah LiFePO4 Deep Cycle Battery: This is a no-frills, robust battery with a rated capacity of 1280Wh. It doesn't include Bluetooth or a dedicated app, focusing solely on reliable power delivery.
- Bateria Power 20A MPPT Solar Charge Controller (SunRock 20S): This controller features an all-metal and glass construction with a large heat sink. It supports 12V, 24V, 36V, and 48V battery systems. For a 12V battery, it can handle a maximum solar input of 300W with a maximum PV input voltage of 150V. It's controllable via a smartphone app.
Math & Run-Time Numbers
I put the Bateria Power battery through its paces with several real-world tests:
- Microwave (approx. 1800W): The battery handled the surge and ran the microwave for a little over 20 minutes straight.
- Full-Size Gas Furnace (approx. 500W): The battery powered the furnace, including the blower, with ease. Based on typical cycling, it could provide 4 to 6 hours of continuous runtime.
- 120V Mini-Split AC Unit (200W-900W, typically 200W-600W): This unit ran for approximately 3 hours on the single battery.
- Full-Size Household Vacuum Cleaner: The battery successfully ran a Dyson vacuum, demonstrating its ability to handle demanding motor loads.
- High-End Gaming PC (3x 4K monitors, approx. 500-600W): The system ran without issue for a little over 2 hours at full power.
- Full-Size Kitchen Refrigerator (average 97W): In a dedicated capacity test, the battery ran the fridge for approximately 16 hours. The Victron SmartShunt recorded a discharge of 96Ah (1.2kWh), confirming the battery's close-to-rated capacity.
- Gas Clothes Dryer (120V) & Washing Machine (120V): Both appliances successfully started and ran their cycles, proving the battery's capability for laundry needs.
During solar charging, with two 200W panels (400W total) connected in series, the SunRock 20S controller delivered around 220-230W into the 12V battery. This is within the controller's 300W limit for a 12V system, and the battery was fully charged well before the end of the day.
Pros & Cons
Pros:
- Exceptional value for money, especially compared to competitors.
- Solid build quality on both the battery and the charge controller (metal and glass casing on the controller).
- MPPT charge controller supports multiple battery voltages and chemistries.
- Controller includes a user-friendly app for monitoring and settings adjustments.
- Battery handles high surge loads from appliances effectively.
Cons:
- The battery is a no-frills unit; no integrated Bluetooth or advanced features.
- The charge controller's max solar input is limited to 300W for a 12V battery, which might underutilize larger solar arrays if not configured for higher voltage systems.
When To Use This vs. Alternatives
This Bateria Power setup is an excellent choice for homeowners or tinkerers looking for an affordable yet capable off-grid or emergency backup power solution. If you need to power essential household appliances during outages, or if you're building a budget-conscious RV or cabin solar system, this combination offers significant bang for your buck.
Compared to alternatives like Renogy, which offers a similar 20A MPPT controller and 100Ah LiFePO4 battery package for around $468.77 (including tax and discounts), the Bateria Power combination comes in at a much lower $271.27 (with discounts and free shipping). While Renogy offers a Bluetooth module for their controller, the Bateria Power controller has integrated app control, and its battery performs comparably. If cost-effectiveness and solid performance are your top priorities, Bateria Power is a hard-to-beat option.
Bottom Line
The Bateria Power 12.8V 100Ah LiFePO4 battery and 20A MPPT solar charge controller deliver an impressive punch for their price. The battery's robust performance with various household loads, combined with the versatile and well-built charge controller, makes this an outstanding value proposition for anyone diving into DIY solar or needing reliable backup power without breaking the bank.
