Amazon DIY Solar: Build a 5kWh Powerhouse, Beat EcoFlow

Building a powerful, expandable solar power system doesn't have to be complicated or require specialized freight shipping. I’ve assembled an incredibly capable DIY system using readily available components from Amazon, offering superior performance and value compared to many off-the-shelf portable power stations.

What I Built

My goal was to create a modular, high-capacity solar setup that delivers serious power without breaking the bank. To manage the solar input and protect the battery, I used a Bateria Power MPPT solar charge controller with convenient app control. For converting the battery's DC power into usable household AC, I included a Junbpaw 2080-ATS 2000-watt pure sine wave inverter, which is rated for both 24V and 48V DC auto-sensing. Safety is paramount, so I incorporated DC-rated circuit breakers: a 100-amp breaker for the inverter and a 40-amp breaker for the charge controller, along with appropriate 8 AWG silicone wiring and ferrule connectors for secure connections.

This system’s power comes from its well-matched components and robust design. The LiFePO4 battery chemistry offers excellent longevity and deep cycle capabilities, making it ideal for solar storage. Its 51.2V nominal voltage is a key advantage, allowing for smaller gauge wiring compared to 12V or 24V systems, which reduces material costs and physical footprint for the same power output. The MPPT charge controller is crucial; it optimizes the power harvest from the solar panels by constantly tracking the maximum power point, ensuring efficient charging of the battery while preventing overcharging. The pure sine wave inverter is essential for running sensitive electronics, as it produces clean AC power identical to grid power. Using a 48V battery system also means the inverter operates more efficiently, as it draws less current for the same wattage output, reducing heat and improving overall system performance.

My DIY setup boasts over 5 kWh of storage, which is more than double the EcoFlow's capacity, and can handle a solar input of 3000 watts with the specified MPPT charge controller – triple the EcoFlow's capability. The EcoFlow Delta 3 Max Plus power station alone costs around $1,099. If we remove the solar panels from my DIY kit for an apples-to-apples comparison of just the battery, inverter, and charger, the cost is around $1,360. For an additional $240, my system provides almost three times the battery capacity and three times the solar input capability. This means more power for longer durations, more efficient charging, and significant savings per watt-hour.

If you have access to discounted solar panels locally, that's an even better deal, but for most people, the convenience and competitive pricing of Amazon-shipped residential panels are a huge win.
