When it comes to portable power, getting more energy for less money is always the goal. I recently tested a hack for the EcoFlow Delta 2 that not only delivers 25% more energy density than the largest OEM expansion battery but also comes in at a significantly lower price point.
What I Built
My setup involves an EcoFlow Delta 2 paired with a WattCycle 51.2V 50Ah (2560Wh) LiFePO4 battery, connected via a special WattLINK adapter cable. To ensure safety, I also integrated an overcurrent protection device (a DC breaker) into the circuit, a step I believe everyone should take for peace of mind.
WattCycle has been innovating at a breakneck pace, creating solutions specifically for portable power station users. Unlike bulky server rack or golf cart batteries that are great for home backup but impractical for travel, this new WattCycle battery is designed for portability. It's half the capacity of a typical server rack battery but offers a significant decrease in size and weight, making it easy to grab by its sturdy handle and toss into your car, RV, or van.
Why It Works
The magic behind this hack lies in the WattLINK cable. This adapter plugs directly into the EcoFlow's expansion battery port, allowing you to connect inexpensive third-party LiFePO4 batteries. This bypasses the EcoFlow's proprietary communication and internal BMS, giving you more flexibility and control over your power storage. The WattCycle battery itself uses robust LiFePO4 cells, known for their longevity and safety.
The external overcurrent protection device I added is crucial. While the WattLINK cable enables direct connection, it's essential to protect your equipment from potential overloads, especially when dealing with high power draws from the external battery. This simple addition ensures a safer, more reliable setup.

The WattCycle battery measures approximately 10.5 inches wide, 7.125 inches deep, and 13.25 inches high (including terminals), weighing in at about 44 lbs, 15.25 oz. This makes it considerably smaller and lighter than many 100Ah LiFePO4 batteries on the market, which typically weigh around 80 lbs and have larger dimensions.
Math & Run-Time Numbers
I put the WattCycle battery through its paces with a series of tests:
- Capacity Test: Discharged at a 0.2C rate (around 530W) until the battery shut down. The Victron SmartShunt recorded a consumed capacity of 50.8Ah, slightly exceeding the rated 50Ah. This confirms the battery delivers on its stated capacity.
- Heavy Load Test: Pushed the battery up to 110 amps using a heat gun and space heater. The WattCycle battery handled this sustained heavy load impressively, maintaining over 100 amps for several minutes, though the state of charge dropped quickly, as expected for such a high draw.
- Discharge with EcoFlow: The EcoFlow Delta 2 could pull approximately 1027W from the WattCycle expansion battery, demonstrating the high power output available through the expansion port.
- Charge with EcoFlow: When charging the EcoFlow from AC, the system input was around 1165-1171W, with approximately 676W going directly into the WattCycle expansion battery. This shows the significant charging capability offered by this setup.
Pros & Cons
Pros:
- Cost-Effective: Significantly cheaper than OEM EcoFlow expansion batteries.
- Higher Capacity: Offers 25% more energy density (2560Wh) than the EcoFlow Delta 2 Max Smart Extra Battery (2048Wh).
- Portable: Smaller and lighter, with a built-in handle, making it ideal for mobile use (camping, RVing, van life).
- Robust Build: Features a durable metal case, unlike the plastic casing of some alternatives.
- High Power Output: Capable of discharging up to 100A continuously (tested to 110A).
- Flexible Charging: Can be charged via the EcoFlow's internal charger (up to 676W) or with external high-power MPPT charge controllers (up to 40A / 2000W+).
- App Control: WattCycle's app provides detailed battery status (voltage, state of charge, temperature, amps in/out, individual cell voltages) without requiring an account.
Cons:
- No Integrated Communication: The EcoFlow app does not display the state of charge or other data for the third-party WattCycle battery; you need to switch to the WattCycle app for monitoring.
- Internal Wiring: Some internal wiring appears to have tight bends and slight tension when the lid is closed, though flexible wire and protective sleeving are used.
When To Use This vs. Alternatives
This WattCycle expansion battery setup is a sweet spot for EcoFlow Delta 2 users who need more portable power without breaking the bank. If you're frequently taking your power station on the road for camping, RVing, or van life, the lighter weight and smaller size of the WattCycle battery are a huge advantage over heavier server rack batteries or larger, less energy-dense OEM options.
It's particularly beneficial if you want to maximize your solar charging capabilities, as connecting an external MPPT charge controller to the WattCycle battery allows for up to 2000W+ of solar input, far exceeding the EcoFlow's internal 500W limit. If seamless, single-app integration is your absolute top priority and budget isn't a concern, then an OEM EcoFlow expansion battery might be a simpler, albeit more expensive, choice.
Bottom Line
This EcoFlow Delta 2 hack with the WattCycle 51.2V 50Ah LiFePO4 battery is an incredibly powerful and cost-effective upgrade. For approximately $540 (including the adapter cable), you gain 2560Wh of capacity, which is more energy for significantly less money than the EcoFlow Delta 2 Max Smart Extra Battery. The portability, high discharge/charge rates, and robust build make it a fantastic option for anyone looking to expand their EcoFlow's capabilities without incurring a hernia or emptying their wallet.
