Humsienk 10kW Inverter: Great Value, But There's A Catch

I recently unboxed and rigorously tested the Humsienk 12000 Plus+ 120/240V split-phase off-grid inverter. This unit, from one of my favorite budget solar brands, promised a lot of power in a compact package. While it boasts exceptional battery compatibility, I quickly discovered a critical detail that makes it a different beast than advertised.

What I Built

The Humsienk 12000 Plus+ arrived well-packaged with all the necessary components: a communication cable, a WiFi dongle, various mounting hardware, cable terminals, magnetic vent dust covers, and a comprehensive product manual. I set it up in my garage, right next to my EG4 12000XP inverter, allowing for a direct comparison of their size and features. The Humsienk is notably smaller than the EG4, a definite plus for space-conscious installations.

Why It Works

The Humsienk 12000 Plus+ is designed as a 120/240V split-phase inverter, accepting a 51.2V nominal battery voltage. It supports a maximum charge and discharge current of 220A DC. For solar input, it features two MPPT charge controllers, each capable of handling up to 6000W, for a total of 12,000W PV input. The MPPT operating range is 90V to 450V DC.

On the AC side, it’s rated for a maximum 60A input from the grid and states a 50A AC output, totaling 12,000W. However, as my testing later revealed, this 12,000W output rating is misleading. The unit actually delivers a maximum of 10,000W in split-phase inverter mode, and 7,200W in single-phase mode, as confirmed by its manual. This is a crucial distinction for potential buyers.

Math & Run-Time Numbers

During my load testing, I used an EG4 12000XP to charge other batteries, creating a significant load for the Humsienk. Initially, when set to charge at 200A, the Humsienk faulted with an "Inverter Overload" error at around 11,000W. After adjusting the charge rate to 150A, the inverter stabilized at approximately 9,300W. However, inspecting the output information on the display, I saw individual legs (L1 and L2) reporting around 5,000W each. This indicated a combined output of approximately 10,000W, despite the 12,000W rating on the sticker.

This discrepancy was later confirmed in the inverter's manual, which explicitly states a "Rated output power (W)" of 10,000W for split-phase operation. This means the unit is a 10,000W inverter, not 12,000W. The idle power draw was measured at about 92.75W (53V * 1.75A), which is quite good for a unit of this size and true capacity. The maximum AC charging current from the grid is 120A, which it happily sustained.

When To Use This vs. Alternatives

The Humsienk 10000 Plus+ (as I'll call it, based on its true output) is an excellent choice for a few specific scenarios. If you're just starting your journey into DIY solar and want a powerful inverter that offers great value without breaking the bank, this is a strong contender. Its compatibility with many battery types means you have options when building out your system. It's also suitable for small remote outbuildings, like a well pump house, where you need substantial power but don't require massive battery storage.

However, if you prioritize integrated safety features like built-in AC output breakers or PV disconnects, or if you need advanced smart load capabilities for AC coupling existing solar arrays, alternatives like the EG4 12000XP might be more suitable. The EG4 also offers a full 100A pass-through transfer switch compared to the Humsienk's 50A. While the Humsienk's compact size is a benefit, the tight wiring space is a trade-off to consider.

Bottom Line

The Humsienk 12000 Plus+, despite its actual 10,000W output in split-phase mode, is a very capable and cost-effective inverter. Its wide battery compatibility, remote control via app, and decent idle power draw make it an attractive option for many homeowners and tinkerers. The physical wiring space and the lack of certain integrated features are minor downsides, especially given its impressive price point. It’s a solid choice if you understand its true capabilities and are willing to add external safety components.
